decivilization » » is not an extreme right-wing concept. When questioned about the rise of violence in France, the incumbent President stated, « We must be uncompromising on the core issue, » added the Head of State. « No form of violence, whether verbal or physical, is legitimate. » He highlighted a « process of decivilization. »
Where does the concept of decivilization come from?
Although many left-wing media outlets have associated the decivilization thesis with the ideas of essayist Renaud Camus, a notorious idiot who is responsible for the fanciful « great replacement » thesis propagated by far-right extremists, the concept of decivilization dates back much further.
The originator of this thesis is Norbert Elias, who shaped this thinking to explain the collapse of values in Nazi, fascist, and Francoist dictatorships. In his exposition, he explains that Western civilizations, which grant the state a monopoly on legitimate violence (as per Max Weber), allow the civilization it governs to develop in other aspects. This explains the economic, cultural, and scientific dynamism of democracies.
However, at a certain stage, we witness a collapse based on several factors. The determining factor of this collapse is undoubtedly the disregard for the aspirations of the rising generations and their repression resulting in violence. Thus, these rising generations display violence, which simplifies the process of decivilization to the extreme.
In Nazi Germany, the unfavorable Treaty of 1919, the humiliation of the younger generations, and the 1929 crisis partly explain why the Weimar Republic was unable, or rather incapable, of meeting the aspirations of that generation. Consequently, Nazi Germany’s violence permeated all segments of society, culminating in the extreme horrors of concentration camps.
Why is Macron making a mistake? Since the beginning of his presidency, despite being able to boast of resolving significant economic issues, the man has never taken into account the aspirations of the French population, which now believes in violence. This holds true during the Yellow Vests crisis, pension reforms, or even climate concerns. In fact, 30% of French citizens today consider violence as a legitimate means to achieve their ends. In this perspective, discussing « decivilization » while the state has merely resorted to repression without ever considering the aspirations of these generations highlights his own failings. According to Norbert Elias, « decivilization » always stems from a conflict between generations.
